Already awash with wonderful and eclectic food options, it’s hard to fathom how London can keep producing new restaurants of such excellent quality. But she does. I guess some fall off the bottom of the stack to make room, or we just loosen our belts and purse strings and welcome the noobies in. New feverish foodie dreams are hatched in bars and at kitchen tables all the time. Some work, some don’t. These are the few that have impressed me recently. None are ‘high-end’ or exey, but each has a unique quality, a substantial soul and a welcoming heart. And the food is jolly delicious. My favorite London Restaurant Openings right here, right now:
If you live in London and haven’t seen recent press coverage of Asma Khan’s Darjeeling Express you must be dead. This wonderful woman is everywhere. Asma nervously dipped her toe in culinary waters a few years ago, hosting a supperclub in her home. She’s recently captured the imagination of a city of foodies and their news editors, with her ‘women’s only’ kitchen pumping out quality authentic Indian food. Charming, hospitable space with real warmth and excellent food.

Hoppers, the first born, caused a sensation when it opened in Frith Street, Soho less than a year ago. Rarely able to meet demand in the 36-seater, they spotted an opportunity in a newly redeveloped corner of St Christopher’s Place and have been buzzing ever since. Excellent value, Sri Lankan fare, the food is stunningly complex and the ambience light and simple. A favorite ‘happy place’ and one of my favorite new London restaurant openings.

La Fromagerie – Bloomsbury
I live about 3 minutes from the Marylebone La Fromagerie branch so happily my cheese cravings are easily sated. But this newly opened Lambs Conduit branch will become a fave for anyone on the Bloomsbury side of town. The usual excellent quality produce is built out in Bloomsbury with the addition of an upstairs Seafood Bar and a more extensive eat-in menu. Longer opening hours see this branch open until 10pm except Sundays.

Kingly Street is on fire at the moment. Rapidly becoming a hub for some of the hottest, most exciting eateries around. One of its newest residents is Hackney born Breddos Tacos. Famed for their treatment of the taco this place is a food trend in the making. Excellent Mexican and American street food inspired plates in a great part of Soho.

I’ll be doing a London Restaurant Openings update monthly, so check back next month to see what’s hot and happening in November.
